Welcome to N5327 Nursing Theory
Gree±ngs! My name is Kathy Speer and I am your faculty for this course. I have been a
registered nurse for over 35 years and am the director of an evidence based prac±ce and
research department at a children’s hospital. I am dual cer±Fed as a Primary Care Nurse
Prac±±oner and a clinical nurse leader and am also a clinical nurse specialist. I have taught at
the University of Texas at Arlington intermi²ently since the early 1990’s and helped to develop
the acute care pediatric nurse prac±±oner program. I have had joint appointments with
academia and health care organiza±ons for 25 + years and 6 years’ experience in online
teaching. I am honored to be asked to work with each of you in this on-line skills course.
All of us recognize healthcare is con±nuously evolving and advanced prac±ce nurses o³en are
called upon to help educate, promote health and o´er management strategies to pa±ents with
chronic diseases. My goal is to introduce you to acquaint you to the concepts of theory and
conceptual models and how they provide the structure to guide nursing care and care delivery
and healthcare organiza±ons. To also iden±fy other theories that impact pa±ent outcomes and
implementa±on of change.
I know each of you have embarked on this journey to further your educa±on because you are
lifelong learners and realize your poten±al to help so many that put their healthcare in your
hands.
I look forward to assis±ng you on this journey of enhancing your knowledge and skills in this
course.
