Many developing countries in the “Global South” turned to socialism in the past as a means to solve their economic problems. Now, in the light of the evident failure of socialism, many of these countries seek to create fast growth through the establishment of “market economies.”

• Using the country you researched in the e-Activity, identify which of the five market economy policies the country appears to be following. Explain how you reached this conclusion.

In your reading about the Third Gulf war (as covered in our textbook in week 5) , in which the US took out Iraqi president Saddam Hussein in 2003, it notes that after the US bombings raid, we disbanded his Sunni Iraqi soldiers/military, as well as its security forces and police. Later, after new elections, Iraq went into the hands of the Shi’ite majority and became a strong ally of Iran! This was one of the war’s unintended consequences.

While the US tried to instill a sense of pluralistic cooperation within the coalition government and other entities like the Sons of Iraq, it seems that the more radical elements of Al-Qaeda, Wahhabism, and Islamic fundamentalism claimed the battlegrounds. Moderation is hard to foster in a war torn region once the absolute dictators are removed and vengeance is on the loose.
