1. In considering the international realm,
let’s consider the concept of economic treaties. Specifically, let’s think
about an organization like the European Union (EU). Why was it formed? In
addition, what are some of the objectives of the nations that are joining the
EU?

2. Sovereignty isn’t what it used to
be…the European Union means members have to surrender their currency for the
Euro, and NATO members have to be willing to hand over elements of their
military forces to NATO leaders in Brussels. What’s happened to the idea that
governments are the last word on what happens in their countries?

3. Everyone…the Cold War was a bi-polar
struggle between communism and capitalism.
Capitalism won. It’s one world,
and it’s been a largely peaceful one. And that peace has been underwritten, for
the most part by organizations such as the European Union. Noheli’s post mentions some of the
highlights. It was created by Jean Monnet shortly after WW2…is economic
integration a lesson learned from that conflict?

4. It’s said that the mark of a fine wine,
beyond its bouquet and its finish, is its ability to travel well. Dodgy
vintages lose their appeal in less than perfect surroundings….can the same be
said for democracy? Is that why violence if often part of the democracy
transplant process?

5. Nothing ever plays in North Korea…Not
even The Interview…but Democracy seems to work fine in some places in the
world…but is having a rough go of it elsewhere…do you think there are
necessary preconditions for a democracy to work globally?

6. Let’s talk about the importance of
religion in government…perhaps we can identify the differences between a
secular and a theocratic political system?
