Nuclear Weapons
Many nations seek to develop nuclear weapons for deterrence, security, and/or to gain empowerment
on a global scale. But what is the regional impact? Imagine that you live in another world. Within that
world, there are 50 nations. Five nations have nuclear weapons, but none of those nations are in the
same geographic region as your nation; they are far away. Suddenly, a sixth nation demonstrates its
nuclear weapons capability with a nuclear detonation test in the desert. That nation shares a border
with your nation. As a citizen of your nation, how would you feel? Imagine you are the political leader of
your nation. How would you feel? What actions would you take to avoid being bullied by your new

nuclear-powered neighbor? Would you develop nuclear weapons of your own? These are questions
nations around the world have grappled with as regional neighbors have acquired nuclear weapons.
To prepare for this Discussion:

Read Chapters 5 and 6 in Global Issues. Focus on the "The Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons"
section in Chapter 6 for information about the spread of nuclear weapons.

View the media piece, "Countdown to Hope: Opposing the Threat of Nuclear War," to
understand how opposition to nuclear war is challenging traditional beliefs about nuclear
weapons, deterrence, and Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD).

Consider the roles of nations and nuclear weapons: those who have nuclear arms, those who
want nuclear arms, and those who want to stop others from having nuclear arms.
