Capstone Preparation: Milestones

You have now begun Phase II of your nursing program, congratulations! Now is the time to think about finding a mentor for your Capstone experience and if an affiliation agreement is needed.  Please take the time to view the FAQ section in the MS Practice Experience Guide. This should lead you toward completing a successful Capstone project and experience in the near future.

Also, visit the My Practice Experience Marketplace. This course will be your “one-stop shopping” site for practice experience information as you take courses in the Bachelor, and/or Master of Science programs for the School of Nursing at Excelsior College. Here you can find a list of Capstone Practice Experience project ideas that can be done on-site or remotely with a mentor.

The Capstone is the final requirement of the nursing program. It provides students with an opportunity to apply knowledge and competencies gained throughout the program of study to actual or simulated situations. The capstone practice experience project is individualized, and the rate at which you’ll progress will depend on many factors such as your ability to find a mentor, your ability to manage your time, and your need for an affiliation agreement.

Excelsior’s capstone course occurs over a 15-week period and includes 247.5 practice experience hours. These hours include working on the project proposal, searching for supporting scholarly works, time spent with your mentor, independent project activities, writing a scholarly paper, preparing an abstract intended for submission to a professional organization and/or journal, and recording a presentation.

You can—and should—begin planning for your capstone and your need to find a Mentor as soon as you begin your Phase II courses. This guide  Download guideoutlines what you need to do to be ready to start your capstone and what the path through your capstone looks like. If the organization where you will be completing your Capstone Practice Experience requires an Affiliation Agreement, contact the School of Nursing as soon as possible. The Affiliation Agreement process can take up to 16 weeks to complete.

Affiliation Agreement: An affiliation agreement is a legal agreement between Excelsior College and the facility where you’ll be completing your capstone work. Not all facilities require agreements, but if they do, the agreement has to be approved by both the facility’s and Excelsior’s legal departments and can take up to 16 weeks to finalize. That’s why it’s so important to start prepping for your capstone as soon as you begin Phase II of your master’s program. Your potential mentor should be able to direct you to the department that can tell you if an affiliation agreement is needed.

IRB Application: Some facilities require students to obtain Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval prior to working on a quality improvement project. The primary purpose of the IRB is to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects and to ensure ethical principles are followed in research. While quality improvement projects are not research, in some cases they warrant IRB review to protect the rights of staff during a quality improvement. Does the facility where you will be working with your mentor and completing your practice experience require IRB approval?
